my thoughts
and notes on the CD:
Anyone who knows me fairly well knows that I basically worship the
band Antarctica, and furthermore, the musical work of Chris Donohue
(currently in the band Ova Looven). I also have been a lifelong
fan of the Cure, and also 80s new wave (New Order, Thompson Twins,
etc.) When I first heard Antarctica, they blended the sounds of
all the shit I loved and wanted to blend in my own music. I was
blown away by their debut album 81:03. I started work on
this album in 2004, where again (like the Autumn Skylight record),
I wrote three songs in a weekend (well, actually one night). I was
so inspired after listening to Antarctica's only album 81:03
that I just sat at the computer, started playing some guitar
chords to a click track, and added part after part until one song's
music was fully complete ("Reverberated Stairwell", which
kicks off the record), and then I went on to record two more. It
was a marathon songwriting night. Felt awesome.
In the weeks that followed, I finished four more songs, without vocals. Once again, the project took a back burner because I was so heavily focused on writing music for Beauty's Confusion.
In early 2005, I started seeing the first girl since Megan left me... an absolutely stunning (and sweet) woman named Elissa. We hung out a few times, made out a few times, and talked a lot about art, as she was a great painter, and a pretty decent singer, too. I had never been with a more attractive person in my whole life. Elissa floored me with her eyes, her voice, her smell (still the best-smelling girl I've ever been with- she said it was her Aphrodesia perfume... who knows). I digress. Anyway...
I was coming home from Elissa's house at 4am one morning, and I was listening to the Greyhound Rescue instrumental mix in my car, trying to think of lyrics to write to the music. I saw a beautiful early morning sky, pitch black, as I was driving. I saw the shadows and silhouettes of trees against the cloudy night sky and it just mesmerized me. I started singing along an improvised line and I finally freed myself from the writer's block attached to the music. The song playing during the drive became "Once" which you can hear above. The main line being "silhouettes... of the trees... against the night sky... above me..."
In 2006, I finished two more songs, music only. Most of 2006, I had scattered vocal ideas but never anything recorded and set in stone. Finally, in one week, I forced myself to finish the record vocally... and I'm very happy with the outcome.
Again, as I began this page, anyone who knows me fairly well knows that I basically worship the band Antarctica. This is the result of their longtime influence on me. I know it sounds a lot like their record 81:03. It wasn't fully intentional. But a band who inspires me basically more than any other... one is bound to hear the influence clearly. Hope you dig.
