my thoughts
and notes on the album and band:
Jenna was not the original singer in BC... I met a woman named Edie
Marshall from the internet who became the first vocalist and co-songwriter
in BC. We initially formed as a trio (with my friend Joel Legros
handling guitars and songwriting duties) in summer 2001. Shortly
before 9-11 happened, we recorded the first four songs which would
comprise most of the EP (Outcry, The Wrong Way, Windmills, and Innocence
Destructing -- all lyrics and vocal melodies written by Edie). Edie
wound up quitting BC on Valentine's Day, 2002. I had known Jenna
for a month before Edie quit and asked her if she'd like to take
Edie's place, and Jenna gladly accepted.
Joel left the group to focus on college in March of 2004. Jenna and I released the album on September 21st, 2004 as the two of us, with Joel playing guitars throughout as a guest musician. We included him in the group photo (the three of us chowing down at Antonio's Pizza in downtown Fort Myers, FL). The record miraculously was finished even after going through FOUR separate hurricanes (the worst of which was Hurricane Charley)... after releasing the CD, Jenna and I decided we had had enough of the horrible Florida weather and left for suburban Philadelphia less than a month after our CD release party.
I'm proud of this record. Rom Di Prisco of Canadian electronic project Bitstream Dream added additional arrangements to a lot of the songs and also engineered 90% of the record. He wrote the music to "Whirlwind" (and Jenna and I wrote the lyrics and the way they were sung), and that song is definitely a strong track on the album and seems to be a fan favorite. My favorite songs on the album are the three that I penned entirely (musically and vocally), which are "Silhouette", "Walls" and "City." Those songs were about my fear of the love of my life leaving me (my ex Megan). She ultimately did leave me for another guy a week before Breathe In came out. Those three songs will always hold a special place in my heart.
As a duo, we rarely played live (difficult to get shows as a downtempo electronic duo). As a trio (with Joel), we played out often (especially in our hometown of Fort Myers, FL). We sold about 200 copies of Breathe In at our live shows. On the internet, to date, we have sold around 1200+ copies. Overall, the album has generated quite a buzz within the underground music scene and especially among European trip-hop fans.
I've always been the workaholic in Beauty's Confusion, and wrote nearly all of the music, lyrics, and the way the songs were sung. The only exceptions were "Blue Deluge", "Moments Like These" (still a big hit within the underground), and "Faded" and "Falling" which were mostly written by Jenna.
In summer 2006, I asked if she was ok with announcing on the website that we had gone our separate ways, musically, because we hadn't finished anything new for a long-ass time. She was ok with it. But then, a few weeks later, I wanted to still write with her and give it another go because what we had was special, and we should continue to write music together. We had a good following online and still do as I write this. She agreed to keep the band together, and we announced on our website that we were still together and working on new material for the next full-length record.
A year passed without anything new written, and after some bullshit between her and I, we came to an agreement about Beauty's Confusion in July '07. We decided to keep it strictly an occasional recording project. We'll write and record when we can. No rushing, no bad blood, no stress and no dreams of "making it big" and/or "getting management/promotion" like we initially wanted in 2002. All we want is to release more music. We both really want to finish a second full-length record (and write/release as much music as possible in the future), but her and I are so busy in our personal lives that it's difficult to get more than three songs finished per year. But we're always trying. Thankfully, there are thousands of people around the world who still bug us for new music by sending us email and messages on myspace... all of that positive feedback keeps us going. For the second full-length record, we're shooting for 2008. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
